This work is a revised dissertation submitted under the direction of Herbert Donner at Kiel. Lau explores Isaiah 56-66, in the process developing a model of scribal prophecy that runs against the grain of recent Isaiah studies. Lau works diachronically, but in contrast to most recent studies, he appears skeptical regarding attempts to find a literary cohesion to all eleven chapters. For Lau, the cohesion of these chapters derives neither from careful authorial design nor from systematic editing for the literary context, but from a sophisticated practice of the citation of other texts by “scribal prophets” working within tradent circles (Tradentenkreise). Lau seeks to demonstrate where, how, and, occasionally, why Isaiah 56-66 makes literary reference to earlier materials. He thus portrays Isaiah 56-66 as a composite collection of texts, brought together over time, whose unifying characteristics arise more from the actualizing process of citation than from a formal literary design.
